PUNCH & JUDY SET
SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK 1983
In 1983 I was contacted by Sharon Benge, producer of Sheakespeare in the Park in Fort Worth, Texas. She wanted to add an authentic Punch & Judy show to the festival to be used as an entertainment prior to the main show, as a way of attracting more families with children to come out and experience some Shakespeare.
Punch & Judy actually didn't become an institution in England until well after Elizabethan times, but I thought it would be interesting to re-interpret the set in Elizabethan costumes.
My partner Betty Lehnus and I had already started our own company in Wichita by this time. We specialized in creating large character costumes and mascots, as well as costuming for stage productions. We hadn't done any puppet work since the old days at the TROTTER BROTHERS workshop so we both dove right into this project.
